Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival
In 2008, I became a founder of the Mixed Roots Film & Literary Festival (TM), an annual free public event, to celebrate storytelling of the Mixed racial and cultural experience including transracial/transcultural adoption and interracial/intercultural relationships.
Each June, the Festival brings together film and book lovers, innovative and emerging artists, and multiracial families and individuals for two days of workshops, readings, film screenings and live performance including music, comedy and spoken word. The Festival's featured artists have included Key & Peele, Angela Nissel, Kip Fulbeck, Kim Wayans, Rebecca Walker, Danzy Senna, Susan Straight and many more.
The Festival also hosts the largest West Coast party for Loving Day, a nationwide celebration of the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that affirmed the right of different races to marry. (To find out more about this year's celebration visit the Festival website.) The Festival also has honored innovative storytellers and leaders with the Loving Prize including James McBride, Kip Fulbeck, Nancy Brown, Kim Wayans & Kevin Knotts, Maria P.P. Root, Reg Daniel, Paul Spickard and Angela Nissell among others.
